12th Jan 2013 - A visit to Lek Lim Nonya Cake Confectionary

Wendy is invited by Gavan, the 3rd Generation of lek lim nonya for a hands-on on making their signature items, Ang Koo Kueh.. Gavan is so nice to allow her to bring along her friends and so Wendy ask us along..

When we arrived, Gavan was there waiting for us and he give us a brief intro on Lek Lim Nonya and their history. Lek Lim Nonya Cake Confectionary started off in 1960s at their home kitchen by Gavan's Grandfather and his mum.. When biz starts to pick up, they then move to their current shop at Bedok. Since then, they started to intro more nonya kueh and to attract the younger generations and other ethic group, their kueh are vegetarian and halal certified.. Kuehs like ang koo kueh, rice kueh, soon kueh, etc are all handmade by them to retain taste and texture.. fried items like yam cake, popiah, curry puffs, sardine puffs are also hot favourite in the shop..

the variaties of kuehs and goodies sold at the shop
the deep fried items..
CNY is round the corner and so they are selling handmade CNY goodies by their relatives at the shop too
traditional green bean cookie handmade by a 80+ years old peranakan lady and the mould she uses is already 90 years old... look how detail the cookies are...
handmade soon kueh
handmade rice kueh (peng kueh), their peng kueh is in white colour not the usual pink colour as they wan to follow their traditional. Back then in kampong times, colourings are expensive and so colourings are not added to peng kueh to save costs. But bcoz peng kueh are mainly used for praying and so red dots are dapped on the kueh so that it will not be plain white which the chinese do not like when they offer it to the gods...
my fav since young, kueh lapis.. its so soft and yummy..
our hands on session with Gavan showing us the methods to make the ang koo kueh.. its fun to make your own kueh but i really salute them coz the kitchen is cramped and stuffy and they have to work long hours in the shop to meet the demands of their customers
apart from hands on making ang koo kueh, we also get to wrap our own Pulut inti.. the auntie wrapped this in a fast speed and when its our turn to wrap, we are slower and its defintely not easy..

us with the owners of Lek Lim
Gavan is so nice to let take back their handmade items home to eat.. all are so yummy and my fav are Soon Kueh, Ang Koo Kueh, Kueh Lapis, Sardine Puffs and Popiah..
